Graduate Program: Princeton and the Surrounding Area

Princeton University's exceptional location contributes to its appeal. The University is located within Princeton Borough; the Borough and surrounding Princeton Township have a combined area of 28 square miles and a population of 28,000. Small but not isolated, Princeton is located on the Northeast Corridor train line, providing easy access to Philadelphia and Washington to the south, and New York and Boston to the north. In addition, Princeton abuts the US Route 1 Corridor, which is home to a large number of financial, information, and other service industries. A campus map (both interactive and printable versions) and directions to Princeton may be found here.

The Pocono mountains, about 75 miles to the Northeast, provide excellent skiing and camping opportunities. Fabled New Jersey shore resorts are within an hour's drive from campus, with Atlantic City only 90 minutes away. Princeton is located midway between Philadelphia and New York City, each of which is approximately an hour away. A connecting train running the four miles from campus to Princeton Junction, a stop on the Northeast Corridor train line, provides easy access to the major cities of the East Coast via Amtrak train service, and especially to New York, which is also served by New Jersey Transit trains (off-peak roundtrip fare $15 from Princeton Junction). New York, the most populous city in the United States, is arguably the hub of American culture and commerce; it is home to Broadway and off-Broadway theater, teams (sometimes two) in every major league sport, major museums, performing arts centers and art galleries, a staggering diversity of restaurants, and an unparalleled nightlife. Philadelphia, the second-largest city on the East Coast (and the fifth largest in the United States), offers a mixture of big city excitement and hometown hospitality, with neighborhoods whose character dates back a century or more. Most famous as the birthplace of American independence and home of the Liberty Bell, Philadelphia also boasts America's first zoo, teams in every major league sport, and the Franklin Institute Science Museum.
